My Borgen Project internship is coming to an end...Over the past three months I have learned and accomplished a lot. Working for The Borgen Project has taught me a lot about world poverty efforts and how there is always more people can do to help others. The best piece of advice I've learned over the past couple months would be that it never hurts to ask. Part of my duties during my internship was to fundraise at least $500 on behalf of The Borgen Project's poverty reduction efforts. The motto of it 'never hurting to ask' was so heavily applied here. I reconnected with past friends and family members who I thought wouldn't donate, but ended up contributing to my fundraising success.
Another piece of our methodology is mobilization. I learned that as little as 7-10 emails or calls to our congressional leaders can significantly increase them wanting to support the issue presented. Every week for the past three months I have called and emailed my leaders about poverty reduction legislation. How does this influence them? Our leaders are always working in the best interest of their constituents; therefore, if they find a high amount of support for a certain issue they want to support it. As an intern, I got my peers to email their leaders about the International Affairs Budget, Coronavirus Response, End Tuberculosis Now Act, Keeping Girls in School Act, and more. If you want to email your leaders in regards to any of these issues, use this link: https://borgenproject.org/action-center/. Being part of an organization that works hand-in-hand with congressional leaders to promote change with U.S foreign policy is humbling. Knowing that I have contributed to help pass on legislature that could create positive change for countries in extreme poverty is rewarding. Although my future with The Borgen Project is unknown, I will continue to support and donate to them as long as I am able too. On that note, I strongly encourage you all to do the same. After interning with them on their PR/marketing team, I can say your donations will be handled with the utmost care. If you think this is something you are interested in joining, you can! The Borgen Project takes on new interns and volunteers every month. Our team is constantly looking for inspired people to represent our organization and get the word out about poverty legislature.
